The Battle of the Iron Clads: The CSS Virginia wreaked havoc on the Union fleet when it emerged from the Elizabeth River on March 8, 1861 for the first day of the historic Battle of Hampton Roads

Project Overview

South East Virginia, otherwise known as Hampton Roads, is home to nearly most of the American Civil War battle sites. When the 150 year anniversary was approaching, I was tasked with creating a special section for the Daily Press news site. The most iconic and exciting series of battles were between the ironclad war ships of the Union and Confederacy, the USS Monitor vs the CSS Virginia. To accompany the Sunday newspaper featured articles, I created a series of interactive graphics that depict details and illustrations of the battles, maps and the iron ships themselves.
